RACHEL KRAVETZ EDITING

I am a developmental editor who supports academic writers in shaping their ideas into lucid prose. Through years of editing and working with the writing of students and colleagues, I trust that with thought and dedication, a complex text will achieve clarity and engage readers. I know the challenges that come with realizing a rigorous argument: establishing a frame that compels readers to invest, creating an arc, drawing out analysis, and attending to style. I have also experienced the difference that critically supportive readers can make, not least reducing the sense of isolation that can overwhelm projects, especially if combined with the demands of teaching, service, and promotion. My experience shapes how I approach stepping into a process in constructive ways at any point: as ideas form and call for structure, before an editor reads a manuscript, or after readers provide comments. My role is to help clarify the argument and contribution and draw them through the text. I work with early career scholars managing pressures of the tenure process, as well as experienced and independent scholars seeking to ensure their writing speaks cogently to the readers they wish to reach.

My clients have published with Oxford University Press, Indiana University Press, MIT Press, Stanford University Press, etc., and a range of journals in the humanities and social sciences.

For me, a commitment to intellectual equity means working with the premise that there is room for a multiplicity of ideas and styles in scholarly writing. With a strong background in the fine arts, I also welcome opportunities to work with artists on written materials. I adjust my process based on the specific needs and aims a client has for a piece.
